The loading gate number is XXXXX On the the top of the barrel is says Colts PT F.A.Mfg Co Hartford, CT. ![]() Why they skipped about a thousand numbers when going to the SA prefix and 2,000 when splitting the SA remains a mystery. In 1993 number SA99999 was reached, then Colt split the SA to S2001A. Colt SAA serial numbers went to 99999SA in 1978. ![]() Those first Single Actions were chambered in.38 Special and.45 Colt with serial numbers beginning at 0001SA to distinguish them from the serial numbers of the First Generation Colts which began at 1 and ended in the 357,000 range. By 1956 Colt decided there really was a market once again for the Single Action Army.
